How do you pronounce your name? Do you have any pets? What are your favorite books? These are some of the conversations we had in art class as we started creatively drawing our names and adding pictures on a small strip of paper. Our inspiration was the book, Yefferson, Actually, which is part of Encinal’s Community Read initiative.
At Encinal, Empathy is one of our Learner Aims and this Art unit gives us practice in this area. Students observed how just one paper link could be combined with many others to make a beautiful installation. Kindergarten and 1st grade students were in for a treat when their individual art was connected to the others in the class to make a paper chain (thank you parent helpers). 2nd-5th graders worked together to form a plan, revise it and then build the collaborative paper art together. We had diverse outcomes as some classes created a letter from their links, a shape, a pattern, a toucan and even some candy. One 5th grader exclaimed while he worked with friends to build the toucan’s feathers, "This is the best art project ever!” The Community Read is spearheaded by Michelle Betancourt (Encinal’s Instructional Coach) and sponsored by the MPAEF (through a Jeanie Ritchie grant). Art class is taught by Stephanie Noon. Enjoy the art when you visit the classrooms and you can view more on Seesaw and the Encinal Art Website encinalart.weebly.com/gallery-6.html
