This January all Encinal artists practiced cutting paper. Paper was folded and cut. Organic and geometric shapes were formed. Shapes were repeated and overlapped. Surprises were discovered! Positive and negative shapes came together to form a collage. Henri Matisse's art and his perseverance inspired students (see Henri's Scissors by Jeannette Winter from Library and Art classes). Above is our process. We practiced cutting & learned from mistakes as we made discoveries. Later we edited, arranged and glued. Below are a few completed collages! All Encinal artists are now experts in the history, art and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty. Ask your child about the 7 spikes, the tablet she holds and why her foot has a broken chain and is in motion. In Library class and Art class students dived deep into this theme (see Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers) and we culminated the unit with an oil pastel mural in each class. Some are now on display on campus and all are posted on Seesaw (search for your child's art class). Enjoy a few murals below. Special thanks to "Art Projects for Kids" for the templates and the PTO for funding the materials! Row 1 (large): Mrs. Powell's 5th grade class

K-5 grade students created a self portrait, in crayon, using the color of their table and it's analogous color on the color wheel (such as red and red-orange). Below is the work of the kindergarteners who blended colors and showed their personality through their portrait! To see more, view your child's art class journal in Seesaw.
